February 2025 Legislative Update

Posted By: James Nichols Industry, The Update,

As we step into 2025, the year has not started as smoothly as we had hoped. The implementation of the newest Ordinance Banning Pre-Tenancy Fees in Ann Arbor has posed significant challenges for our members. Navigating these changes has been complex, and we recognize the difficulties our members are facing. To support our community, the Washtenaw Area Apartment Association is working in partnership with Fink & Fink to host a Virtual Q&A Session. This event will provide an opportunity for members to ask questions and learn from others about how they are addressing these challenges. We will announce the date and time as soon as it is confirmed with Fink’s team.

Additionally, the City of Ann Arbor is advancing its Green Rental Housing (GRH) Initiative. This initiative aims to encourage property owners to implement energy-efficient updates to their properties, playing a crucial role in the city’s efforts to achieve its A2Zero sustainability goals by 2030. To help our members understand the requirements and compliance measures, we are providing links to the city’s FAQ and compliance checklist. Furthermore, we are hosting an in-person Q&A Session with Joe Lange, the leader of the GRH Initiative, on February 18th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. This event is free for all members, and we strongly encourage attendance to gain valuable insights and clarification on the initiative.

Statewide Legislative Update

In statewide political news, U.S. Senator Gary Peters has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2026. This decision marks a historic moment for Michigan, as it will be the first time that both the Governor’s office and a U.S. Senate seat will be open simultaneously. This development is expected to significantly impact Michigan’s political landscape in the coming years.
